The Salt Lake City Fire Department is asking everyone to please clear the snow from the fire hydrants near their homes and businesses. SLCFD firefighters had an additional challenge this morning when responding to a bus fire.
At 9:52 a.m, on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, SLCFD responded to a bus fire at 2147 E. Pollock Rd. Upon arrival, firefighters found the bus fully involved. The bus driver, who had called 911, was attempting to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher kept on board of the bus.
The bus driver was the only person on board of the bus and was not injured.
SLCFD firefighters quickly went to work, but were delayed a bit when they had difficulty locating a fire hydrant. All the hydrants in the area were buried in snow from the storm that has hit the area over the last two days. Two firefighters were assigned to locate the nearest hydrant and then dig it out.
Once the hydrant was cleared from the snow, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The bus was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
